Camping! I hope I find lots of Easter eggs. I hope the Easter bunny brings me a chocolate bunny. I hope my Mommy likes that time. And my Daddy. And my little sister. I hope Austin comes. I like Easter because it’s really fun! I hope Daddy gets a new computer and a new camera. On April 5th it’s my Daddy’s birthday. Shhh. Don’t tell, but my mommy got me some music to learn piano with for me to give him tonight.

There was a boy that went on the wrong train. And he didn’t want to go on the wrong train. And he said I’m not going on this train. I’m not. No, no, no, no, no, no, no. He wanted to go to the right train, but he went on the wrong one. He wanted to go on the Halloween train. He’s going to change into his costume when he gets there. But, he went on the Christmas one by accident. But really by on purpose because he knows that one was the Christmas train. He did not want to go but then he got some cookies for dinner. And when he got there it was cold and he didn’t have the right clothes. Santa gave him sweater but he did not like that sweater. And so he gave him a different one. He loved that sweater because it was a Christmas sweater. And his sister got to have an elf one but she did not want that one. She said no, no, I want Christmas one and they went home and they got presents. And so, they opened them up! They opened one and it was something for the boy. A dinosaur outfit. A T-Rex and he put it on. The next one was for her. Another dinosaur outfit. So they played dinosaurs. And the next one was palm trees, the forest where they lived. That’s all.

Vegetarian 18, dec 2009

This blog is written keeping in mind that it would help all vegetarian people who love to cook or have home made food. The recipes which are listed here are healthy and tasty. One would love to have. And moreover many dishes are easy to prepare.

Many recipes which listed here are taken from book which was written by late smt. S.Padma. She is my uncle's mother. When I got that book I was literally shocked as she listed more than 200 recipes. And date mentioned in the book is 1st May, 1951. Never thought that I will share recipes of lady who expressed her work in 1951 through book. It is so difficult for me to just translate her recipes into english, how much patience she would have had to write so many recipes. Thanks to her as her work became useful exactly after 57 years, which is age of a person these days.

How her recipes became useful to me, hope they might become useful to reader of this blog. If there are any suggestions to improve the blog feel free to contact through comments or email. If anyone would like to know any special dish or new one if one could not find, then they can put their question, if possible will try to get the answer.

Punjabi Food

Punjabi food is wholesome and full of rustic flavor. The custom of cooking in community ovens or tandoors prevails in rural areas even today. Tandoori dishes are popular all over the country today. Nans and parathas, rotis made of maize flour (makke di roti) are typical Punjabi breads. Of course, over the years the roti has been modified to add more variety, so there is the rumali roti, the naan and the laccha parathas, all cooked in the tandoor.

In Punjabi homes makke di roti and sarson ka saag is something of a delicacy simply because of the time it takes to prepare the dish. Besides the long preparation time, these vitamin rich dishes also require a lot of time to cook. Almost all the preparations are cooked on a slow fire to coax out that perfectly robust taste. Sarson ka saag is cooked on a slow fire for hours with a minimum of spices so that the fresh taste can be retained. In fact, the longer it takes to cook the saag, the better it tastes.

The dals are a specialty of Punjabi cuisine. Made of whole pulses like black gram, green gram and Bengal gram, they are cooked on a slow fire, often simmered for hours till they turn creamy and then are flavored with spices and rounded off with malai for that rich finish. The basic gravy used for vegetables and meat dishes is onion-tomato-garlic-ginger

Zebra cake, 16 dec 2009

Zebra cake

Seeing a lot of Zebra cakes on various blogs, I was inspired to make one..but decided to go for a shortcut by using the pillsbury cooker cake mix..I prepared the batter and divided the batter into two - half vanilla and half chocolate..Everything went on well, I could form the layers also to some extent..There went my cake in the cooker and an over-excited me went on checking if it is ready every few minutes. Finally I decide to invert it into a tray and cut it hurriedly to see how the cake has turned out..I should have been a little more patient in ensuring that the cake is well cooked and to cut it after it cools down..The result- the cake was uncooked in the center and the pieces were uneven and different shapes as the uncooked portions had to be thrown out..Check out the pics that I never uploaded to the blog thinking that some day I would make it again.

Apart from this, once I went to my friends house and returned back after about 40 minutes only to see my ladiesfinger curry burnt completely in the kadai as I forgot to switch off the gas..The most recent was of not switching off the stove with the dosa tava on it after making dosas in the morning. After almost an hour when I went to take some biscuits, I found the place close to the stove very hot only to realise my mistake..After every such event, I am alert for about a month and keep checking often if the stove is switched off.
Mom was hanging out the laundry yesterday and she heard a commotion on the street right across from our yard. She ignored it at first but after 15 mins, the little crowd was still there, so out of curosity, she popped her head out further and saw that there was a Husky lying by the side of the road. The poor doggie was lying there under the scorching midday sun, and mom was pissed that no one had enough sense to give the poor dog some reprieve from the heat, considering the fact that he's got a full coat. Some of the humans gathered there had enough sense to seek shelter under an umbrella or in the shade of a tree but no one thought of the dog!!! It must've been a good 32 ºC (90 ºF) on that day.

Mom grabbed some cold water from the fridge and the biggest umbrella she could find and went across to the 'crime scene'. The owner of the doggie was there and mom passed her the umbrella after telling her that it was meant for her dog. The poor doggie was involved in a hit and run and was bleeding from his hind legs. The sh*thead driver who knocked him down did not even stop to help and a passing motorist took gave chase. Unfortunately the culprit refused to stop and the kind motorist who gave chase came all the way back to the scene and gave the license plate number to the Husky's owner.

The doggie's condition didn't look good and mom thinks he suffered a bad hit to his hind quarters. He was conscious throughout and mom said he even gave her a few feeble licks when she stroked his head. Mom stayed with the distraught owner until the pet taxi arrived to take him to the Animal Hospital...

We hope that his injuries are not serious and he'd be back on his paws soon...

About Lipsticks

A lifetime of lip balm use has made me an expert, and I'm very particular about the balms I use. They have to be non-waxy, organic, soothing and preferably, moderately priced. I keep tubes and tins of lip balm all over the place [desk, car, bathroom, purse, etc.] so I prefer to keep the cost under $5, since inevitably, some will disappear or get misplaced.

I started using EcoLips last year, after reading about them in someone's blog. I liked the fact that they're an American, family-owned company based in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. They offer a wide variety of balms, including vegan and vegetarian. Their prices are reasonable, with most balms between $1.99 - 3.99.

I ordered a selection and they're all excellent. My favorite is their Organic Eco Lips Gold ($3.49). It's 99% organic and exceptionally soothing (Ingredients: Organic Jojoba Oil, Organic Sunflower Seed Oil, Organic Beeswax, Vitamin E, Organic Calendula Flower Extract, Vitamin A. Cruelty, Gluten and Petrolatum free. No Hydrogenated Oils.) This lip balm addict considers Eco Lips one of the top three lip balms on the market (the other two are Badger Balm and Aroma Borealis

When I got home last night, my husband was upstairs, still putting the kids to bed. It sounded pretty quiet, but there was still a sleepy mumble or two coming from the bedrooms. I decided to stay downstairs until I knew the kids were asleep, in order not to rouse them.

There wasn't enough time to do much else that wouldn't make noise, so I grabbed a basket of laundry to fold and popped on the television. A movie was on called Little Children. It seemed pretty interesting, but I soon learned that the main character was in the middle of a loveless marriage. There were so many wrong choices that this couple was making. The characters themselves, and what subsequently unfolded, made the movie interesting, but I confess what little I saw really disturbed me, and I was happily able to shut the television off at the moment when the wife was about to have sex in the laundry room with the stay at home dad she met on the playground

Strees in daily life

9 Dec 2009

Existence is a gradually becoming a very complicated process. In the olden days, life was much simpler. People were bothered with the day to day proceedings. They did not have much complicated life styles. Their unhappiness was much more basic. Maybe it stemmed from lack of money or resources, or the illness of relatives etc. The word ‘stress’ was virtually unknown at that time. These days, every few sentence includes the word stress in it. Most people do not quite realize what exactly it is.
The word 'stress' is defined by the Oxford Dictionary as "a state of affair involving demand on physical or mental energy". A situation or circumstance (not always adverse), which can disturb the normal physical and mental
health of an individual. In medical terms 'stress' is defined as an alteration of the body's homeostasis. This demand on mind-body occurs when it tries to cope with incessant changes in life.
A 'stress' condition seems 'relative' in nature. Extreme stress conditions, psychologists say, are detrimental to human health but in moderation stress is normal and, in many cases, proves useful. Stress, nonetheless, is synonymous with negative conditions.
"Nothing gives one person so much advantage over another as to remain always cool and unruffled under all circumstances."—Thomas Jefferson

About Egyptian Furniture

The typical Egyptian house had sparse furnishings by modern standards. Wood was quite scarce, so large furniture items were not common. By far the most common pieces of furniture were small 3 and 4 leg stools and fly catchers. Stools have been found in common houses as well as in Pharaohs’ tombs. Other items of utilitarian furniture include clay ovens, jars, pots, plates, beds, oil lamps, and small boxes or chests for storing things.
The ever present stool was made from wood, and had a padded leather or woven rush seat. The stools’ 3 or 4 legs were very often carved to look like animal legs. Wealthy people had their stools and all furniture in general was richly decorated with gold or silver leaf. The more common people would have things painted to look more expensive than they were.
The Egyptian bed was a rectangular wooden frame with a mat of woven cords. Instead of using pillows, the Egyptians used a crescent-shaped headrest at one end of the bed. Cylindrical clay ovens were found in almost every kitchen, and the food was stored in large wheel-made clay pots and jars. For common people, food was eaten from clay plates, while the rich could afford bronze, silver, or gold plates. The ruling class also commonly had a throne chair with a square back inlaid with ebony and ivory. Almost everyone also had a chest for storing clothing and a small box for jewelry and cosmetics. Walls were painted, and leather wall hangings were also used. Floors were usually decorated with clay tiles

One of the staple dishes at our house, while growing up, was the wonderful yet simple dish of aloo gobi - gently sautéed cauliflower and potatoes tossed in a aromatic melange of spices. It's certainly has got to be one of the most popular Punjabi vegetarian dishes, which rose to international fame in Gurindar Chaddha’s cult film Bend It Like Beckham. The film does not need any introduction as I am sure almost everyone has seen it.
A few months back my boss, Prof. TS, watched the film and became a fan. The following day he asked me if the Punjabi family - the Bhamras - embodied my family back at home! I had to laugh because it does not get more clichéd than that!
However, there is a certain truth in each cliché and I do remember my grandmother's (nani) credence was very similar to the unreasonable demands Jessminder's family put on her in the film.
Good Punjabi girls are not supposed to run around in skimpy shorts running after a ball, instead she should be charming, shy, dressed decently and know how to cook good down-to-earth Punjabi food. After all she has to fulfill her one purpose in life - marry well and cook a good aloo gobi for her husband. At the age of 15-18 I defied all of these clichéd notions with intrepidity. Luckily for me, my grandfather was mostly on my side!
Nani and I would often banter affectionately: "Meeta stop running around half naked! Swimming, water-skiing - this not something for young ladies- beti" (Beti = daughter) "But Nani I am on the swim team - I can hardly wear a salwar kameez in the pool!" "Swim team, swim team! Forget the swim team. Has your mother taught you how to make dal or aloo gobi yet?" "No nani - I am 16 I do not need to learn how to make all that Indian stuff!" "All that Indian stuff? Ahaha, look here - angrez di puther - you are not only Indian but you are a Punjabi and you will learn how to make aloo gobi!" (angrez di puther = daughter of an English man) "Not now Nani - I have to go to swim practice!"
From behind us I hear my Nana sigh. "Gurcharan - leave the girl alone. If she does not go to swim practice how can she save the life of her drowning husband? She can hardly throw a life saving aloo gobi at him!"
That was my cue to freedom. With a quick hug and a wet kiss on his white bearded cheek I winked at my nana and left for swim practice.

Does Love Exist ?

i don't understand why everyone makes a big deal out of it. like its the best thing that has ever happened to anyone. well maybe is has, but not for me. all these years i see my friends get into a relationship, though i never had a boyfriend,i knew how they feel. i have crushes on so many people and some lasts longer than they should. people say love is amazing. but why so many people get hurt because of something called love? my friends cries when their bf don't listen to them, when their bf don't understand them, stop kissing them,stop.. just stop loving them.it hurts to even like someone. whats worst, it was always one sided for me. i can't deny the fact that it IS indeed a nice feeling to see that someone you feel something for. my heart always beat faster and it makes me so happy and i don't know why. currently i'm waiting for someone call Juz. somehow, the only conversations we have are mostly about our studies. we build a friendship through studying. and feelings, feelings are just feelings. you try so hard to stop yourself from falling for anybody, but next thing you know, you're waiting to see them again. i spent only 2 months with him. never expecting to see him again. and i never did. i don't. its been months. but i miss him still. the last i heard. he was dating someone. we chat online sometime, but, i hate the feeling it gave me. maybe its just infactuation,it happens to everybody anyways. but it hurts to miss someone so much, to think about them,to want them,to feel their presence. and you know what is the worst part? They don't even care. You don't even cross their mind. Not once.. not ever. so what is this amazing thing called love? my friend just broke up with her bf. to him,it was too painful to be in a relationship,to her,no matter how painful it was,she wanted to work things out with him. always wanting to work it out. see what happens? I might still like Juz. i still wait for him,i feel happy when we chat online. but deep down, i don't quite believe in love. i think its just a crap feeling, like booze or drugs,it makes you high for only a short moment. you will be addicted to it. however, when you stop taking it, it hurts. reality just slaps you in the face and in love,it slaps you over and over and over again.

Mehndi-Inspired Wedding Cakes
Filed under Alternative Wedding Cakes + Traditions 1:38 pm
Henna is a natural substance used in some cultures to create intricate temporary tattoos, especially on the hands and feet. It is traditional for brides and, in some cases, grooms, to have mehndi designs applied in the days leading up to the wedding. This practice is popular in India, but is also fashionable in other countries as well. Now, you can get a mehndi-inspired wedding cake too!
The cake pictured is by Henna by Heather, a company located in the Northeast, but if you don’t live in that region, you can ask a local artist about the possibility of doing a cake design. Henna tattoos are often extremely intricate, so some cake decorators may not feel comfortable with completing the design you want, but there are many talented artists out there who can create a beautiful mehndi-inspired cake. This is a great spin on an ancient tradition!

Holy Temple

The Holy Temple of the Tooth Relic is located right in the heart of Kandy in Sri Lanka. It is next to a man-made lake named Kiri Muhuda meaning Milk Sea in Sinhala. At the back of the Temple complex is the tall green woods of Udawattakele forest Sanctuary. This is a very sacred place and is believed to house the left upper canine tooth of Buddha himself.

Holy Temple of the Tooth Relic, Kandy, Sri Lanka
The temple buildings are mainly white with red roofs and are surrounded by a wave-like decorative low white wall. The Temple is well protected and I have to pass through two security check points. Before getting into the Temple complex, I have to take off my shoes as well.

Exterior of Holy Temple of the Tooth Relic, Kandy, Sri Lanka
The interior of the Temple is beautifully decorated. To enter into the Temple Central Square, I have to pass through this corridor which is covered with beautiful local paintings.

The relic of the tooth is kept in a two-story inner shrine fronted by two large elephant tusks. The relic rests on a solid gold lotus flower, encased in jeweled caskets that sit on a throne.

Next to this sanctuary, there is also a Temple where a Buddha statue is located. The Temple is also decorated with local architectural features.

I have a closer view of the head of the column. Here, you can see more clearly that there is a golden elephant decoration, a special Sri Lankan feature.
